What is J3068 connector?

What Is SAE J3068?

The SAE J3068 connector is a three-phase AC charging standard for Electric Vehicles, essentially the North American adaptation of Europe’s Mennekes (Type 2) connector, designed for higher-power charging (like 22kW and up) in medium/heavy-duty vehicles and applications needing stable grid loads, though it’s less common in US passenger cars than J1772 but offers benefits like optional three-phase power and compatibility with various AC sources via adapters.
Key Characteristics:
  • Three-Phase AC: Supports single or three-phase AC power, improving grid stability for high-power charging.
  • Higher Power: Capable of delivering significantly more power than standard single-phase J1772, suitable for faster charging.
  • Based on Type 2: Closely related to the IEC 62196 Type 2 connector used in Europe, supporting both AC and DC (as CCS Combo 2).
  • Digital Protocols: Includes digital control protocols (like ISO 15118) for secure and efficient communication between charger and vehicle.
  • Applications: Primarily used for medium-to-heavy-duty EVs, but also available for passenger vehicles, often with adapters for compatibility.
How it Works with Other Standards:
  • J1772: J3068 can interoperate with J1772 via adapters, allowing J1772 chargers to provide power to J3068 vehicles, though this is often for infrequent use.
  • CCS (Combined Charging System): J3068 can integrate with CCS (CCS Combo 2 in Europe), adding DC pins for DC fast charging.
Benefits:
  • Versatility: Compatible with various AC power inputs (like industrial IEC 60309).
  • Scalability: Supports future higher-power charging needs.
  • Smart Features: Allows for vehicle identification, monitoring, and diagnostics.

What Is SAE J3068?

You need a J3068 connector (Type 2) for faster AC electric vehicle (EV) charging, especially in North America, because it uses three-phase power and higher voltages to deliver significantly more power (up to 130kW) than single-phase J1772, supporting heavier loads, grid stability, and compatibility with European standards, enabling faster Level 2 charging.

Why J3068 is Needed?

  • Higher Power Levels: Standard North American Level 2 charging (J1772) is limited, but J3068 allows for much faster AC charging (up to 22kW or more) by utilizing three-phase power, common in commercial settings.
  • Three-Phase Power: It leverages three-phase electricity, which is more efficient for high-power loads, improving grid stability by balancing the load across phases.
  • North American Adaptation: J3068 adapts the European Type 2 connector for North American use, bringing compatibility with global standards and supporting higher voltages (e.g., 480/277V).
  • Supports Heavy-Duty EVs: The standard was developed for medium and heavy-duty EVs, enabling better load management and higher power needs for larger vehicles.
  • Versatility: It supports both single-phase and three-phase AC charging, and can also incorporate DC charging (as part of CCS Combo 2), making it a versatile connector.
  • Backward Compatibility: It enables drivers to bring their own cables to adapt from a J3068 outlet to their car’s native port (like J1772 or NACS), increasing flexibility.
In essence, J3068 bridges the gap for faster, more efficient AC charging in North America by adopting global Type 2 technology for higher power delivery, especially useful for commercial, fleet, and high-demand residential charging.
